I don't know how to control my anger

Welcome to life as a Black man where you've been taught that the only emotion you're allowed to show is anger. A lot of us (Black men) use anger as an umbrella emotion, which means that oftentimes our anger isn't actually anger - it's really sadness, frustration, or confusion that's masked as anger because we haven't been taught how to regulate and process our emotions.

In Safe Haven, we teach men how to deal with anger and how to process the full range of their emotions.

One of our Safe Haven members, Trevar, used to struggle with his anger before he joined Safe Haven. Read what he had to say about his experience in Safe Haven below:

We can teach you how to regulate and process the anger you're dealing with. All you have to do is join Safe Haven, make a post and we'll connect you with the right resources.

I have really bad anxiety

A lot of Black men struggle with anxiety because of the environment we grew up in. It's very common to have anxiety if you had an explosive parent growing up, have been assaulted (sexually, physically or verbally), have been robbed, witnessed extreme violence (someone being assaulted, robbed, killed, etc.) or consume content depicting Black death online (videos of Black people being murdered).

You're not alone in your struggle with anxiety. There are many Black men that are learning how to manage their anxiety in Safe Haven. We offer a free resource on how to deal with anxiety to all members of the platform and can connect you with a therapist to help you further. Let us help you.

I'm depressed and I'm tired of pretending everything is okay

Depression is tough to deal with alone. In fact, depression lies to you by making you believe that you are alone. Don't believe that lie! You're not alone in your experience, but you do need to seek additional support.

In Safe Haven, we can provide you with the support you need to help you overcome your depression. We have a depression support group where you can express what you're dealing with and receive support from other Black men who can relate. Also, we'll connect you with a therapist, so you can work through your depression with a professional.

For some people dealing with depression a psychiatrist may be necessary and we can help you find a psychiatrist in Safe Haven as well.

Lastly, please call 988 if you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts. 988 is the new mental health crisis hotline where you can reach trained counselors. According to the federal Department of Health and Human Services, "988 won't be a busy signal, and 988 won't put you on hold. You will get help."

I want you know I love you. You're not alone and your life matters 💜

I'm always prioritizing everyone else over myself, which is leaving me feeling drained and unappreciated

This is one of the biggest problems we (Black men) deal with today due to the way we have been socialized. From the moment you were born you were taught that you need to be a provider and that the needs of your family comes before your own needs regardless of what we're dealing with.

Don't get me wrong, there are times where you will need to put other people's needs over your own, but if you find yourself consistently putting other people's needs over your own you're NOT providing - you're people-pleasing under the guise of providing for others. Unfortunately, you were taught how to people-please and abandon yourself instead of how to provide.

In Safe Haven, we're teaching men the difference between people-pleasing and providing and how to find an appropriate balance, so they're not left feeling drained and unappreciated.

I'm very critical of myself

The last thing you need as a Black man is another critic especially when that critic is yourself. Your inner voice is your most important voice.

In Safe Haven, we're teaching men how to re-program their inner voice, so they can heal and grow into the version of themselves that they know they can be. You don't need more criticism, you need more grace.

Let us show you how to give yourself the grace you need.

I lack confidence in myself

A lot of us (Black men) weren't affirmed growing up, which makes it extremely difficult to be confident in ourselves and our abilities as we get older.

In Safe Haven, we're teaching men how to build their confidence, so they can pursue whatever (or whomever) they desire. Affirmations are a huge part of confidence-building, which is why we've curated a library of over 100 affirmations designed specifically for Black men. You're one click away from being a more confident and empowered version of yourself.

I am struggling staying consistent with working out, which is affecting my fitness goals

Man, who isn't?! 😂 On a serious note though, we definitely understand how difficult it can be to stay consistent when it comes to your physical fitness, which is why we have a fitness group in Safe Haven where we hold each other accountable for making sure we're hitting our goals.

We do check-ins with each other and lean on each other for support when needed. Sometimes all you really need is to see that there are other Black men on the same journey as you to give you all the motivation you need to keep going.

Let us be your accountability partners in your fitness journey and provide you with the guidance you need to take your fitness to the next level.
